Better Never Than Late

January 23, 2011

I’ve observed most of this Winter that it hasn’t been a bad one. I used to detest Winter with a passion and grumble my way through it. But this year I’ve tried to make the best of it and enjoy what there is to enjoy. I do love wearing scarves and cute boots, spicy/cinnamon scented things, hot tea and coffee. I love soft cozy blankets and watching the snow fall. Not to mention football and the holidays. But those things have become the norm now and the holidays are over, so it’s getting harder to find as much joy in these things.

So the Winter Blues are knocking at my door, despite my best mental efforts to keep them at bay. I am proud that we’re almost through January and I’m just starting to feel it. But it’s probably due to our very mild Fall and early Winter. I’m pretty sure the temps were in the 50’s and 60’s on the last few days of December.

Skyler is feeling it too. She keeps asking me where Spring is. She still has no concept of time, so to tell her it’s a couple months away means nothing. She insists she needs it to be Spring so she can go outside without a jacket. She also told me last week that she needs to go to Anna Maria Island soon, because it’s her most favorite place. Side note: it makes me all teary and joyful that she remembers our vacation so fondly. I hope and pray we can make family trips to Florida a tradition.

Back to the Blues – I’m trying to think what I can do to stave them off before they enter my soul permanently and I’m bummed out till Spring. One thing is we have a ski trip to Colorado planned in just a few weeks, so looking forward to that should help. Yeah, it’s another cold place, but it’s cold and Winter at it’s best! If it’s cold and snowy you might as well be in the gorgeous Rocky Mountains, using the snow for some thrills.

Then there is exercise – getting my heart rate up and kicking my own booty gets the endorphins going. It’s the hardest most sluggish time to do exercise, but if I can make myself do it, it helps me feel so much better! Ronnie wrote me a great workout that I’ve incorporated the last few weeks – it’s 4 moves (lat pull downs, squats, push-ups, and sit-ups) that I’m supposed to do in decreasing rounds from 15 reps down to 1. That adds up to 120 reps of EACH! And to top it off I’m supposed to complete it as fast as I can. My best is around 35 minutes. Total body soreness achieved!

Today I tried a Tabata workout. That’s 20 seconds high intensity reps, 10 seconds rest, eight times over, for each exercise. I did 5 of these – push-ups, squats, in-out ab extensions, wall sits with bicep curl, and stiff leg dead lifts. Technically a 20 minute total workout, but it was sweaty and my muscles are still aching. We’ll see what tomorrow brings on this one! The push-ups were by far the hardest set.

I am nearing the end of this weekend which I expected to be the hardest in terms of Winter Blues, since Ronnie has been in St. Louis since Friday getting CrossFit certified, and won’t get in till late tonight. It’s been just Skyler and me, all weekend, with no real plans. We went to Bob Evans for breakfast together yesterday morning. It wasn’t the mother/daughter bonding experience I’d hoped it would be due to her apparent inability to do anything for herself, causing me to get up out of my seat at the restaurant some twenty times, but it remained on the positive side of memories, nonetheless. We then did some shopping and made a special stop at the mall to ride the merry-go-round and walk through the Disney store. We’ve both had crazy annoying runny noses, putting a damper on our attempts for fun. Other than that, we’ve watched lots of Skyler-oriented TV, and I’m really looking forward to having some adult conversations again soon.

Here’s to hoping I can narrowly escape the full envelope of Winter Blues! Wish me luck that I make it till Spring. I really hope due to our late-onset Winter that doesn’t mean a late-onset Spring. Oh please God, no.
